New Study: Public service media online news - No impact on commercial sector

An independent, peer-reviewed economic study, carried out by Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates, demonstrates that public service media online news has no negative impact on commercial online news providers.

On 12 June, the EBU released independent research, an Economic study on the impact of publicly funded PSM activities on commercial online news publishers, demonstrating that public service media (PSM) online news has no negative impact on commercial online news providers in terms of reach and/or revenue. Carried out by Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates (O&O), the study is the first of its kind at a pan-European level. It was also peer-reviewed by two leading independent experts to ensure the highest standards of academic and methodological rigour.

“We are delighted that an independent study that builds on a wide body of existing research, confirms for the first time at the pan-European level that PSM online news does not negatively impact commercial online news services” said Noel Curran, EBU’s Director General. He continued “This is a very important study for regulators, for our Members and for the European broadcasting sector as a whole to take note of, as European media faces the challenges of a globalized digital world. Public service media is not the problem here.”

As discussions continue across Europe on the role and funding of PSM, this evidence-based analysis reinforces the value of continued support for trustworthy, accessible PSM online news.
