EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework must support innovation in media

The EBU calls on the EU to prioritise robust support for media innovation within the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). Such an investment would equip public media to drive audience engagement, innovate, and safeguard trustworthy journalism. A well-designed MFF can bolster democratic resilience, counter disinformation, and reduce reliance on non-European digital infrastructure.

The EBU has called for robust EU support for media innovation in the European Commission's public consultation on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The MFF is the EU’s long-term budget, it aims to reflect the core priorities of the EU by allocating funds across different policy areas and structuring the funding programmes.

Wouter Gekiere, Head of the EBU’s Brussels Office, said: “With the MFF, we are calling for a robust, structured and dedicated to support tech innovation and the development of AI-inspired solutions for media built on shared European values. Such support would empower public service media and partners in Europe to develop, test and deploy innovative ways to reach citizens, to improve user experience, enrich media offerings and create new services and formats in the interest of the wider public, enhancing their engagement and participation.”

In today's complex information environment, combining high-quality media content with innovative digital solutions developed in Europe is crucial to create a safe digital information space where people can engage with trustworthy content. Effectively structured, the MFF could enhance societal resilience against disinformation, reinforce our democratic space and reduce the current dependencies on digital infrastructures from outside Europe.
