Economic study on the impact of publicly funded PSM activities on commercial online news publishers

Online news from public service media (PSM) has been accused by the commercial press sector that it is “crowding out” or negatively impacting the sustainability of their own news services.

This independent economic study, published by the EBU, addresses these claims at EU and national level, revealing that there is no evidence that PSM online news harms the revenues or reach of commercial news providers.

The study was carried out by Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates (O&O) and peer-reviewed by two leading independent experts, Robert G. Picard (Reuters Institute) and Vardges Levonyan (Zurich University).
