Acquiring Video Content

Acquisitions are key to public service media's video mix, boosting their offer beyond originals.

This brand new report examines the role of acquired content for public service media (PSM), and explores the challenges and strategies shaping their efforts to negotiate rights for these acquisitions, as revealed by a Member Survey

Here’s a glimpse into some key insights:

  • On average, PSM direct 13% of their overall programming expenditures, and 30% of their linear TV hours, to acquired content.
  • PSM evolve on a highly competitive acquisitions market, shaped largely by vertically-integrated US studios. After years of hoarding content for their own on-demand services, they are now opening up to licensing their content using exclusivity and windowing in a more refined way.
  • In this context, PSM trying to acquire content for digital availability as well as linear broadcast face challenges negotiating relevant windows and exclusivity, with boxset availability, stacking rights and pre-broadcast availability becoming more high-stakes elements.
