EBU Greener Orchestras (EBU GO)

The EBU GO community, part of the EBU Media Orchestra Group, was launched in summer 2023 by the management and several musicians from the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, with the aim of developing sustainability initiatives that engage EBU orchestras across Europe. Since then, the community has grown steadily, welcoming participants from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Rundfunk Orchester und Chöre Berlin, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and others. EBU GO brings together both management and musicians, making it a genuinely inclusive working group.

One of the community’s first initiatives, in collaboration with the EBU Music Unit, was the publication of the Sustainability and EBU Media Orchestras report in 2024. This members-only report explores the sustainability practices of Public Service Media (PSM) orchestras within the EBU, highlighting their efforts to address environmental challenges and the obstacles they face.

A particularly exciting project is the living repertoire list: RENEW REUSE RECYCLE: a Repertoire List for Orchestras. Developed by colleagues at the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the list aims to inspire creativity and raise awareness among EBU media orchestras. It encourages the integration of sustainability themes into concert programming as a way to engage audiences musically on urgent environmental issues.
