Deirdre Ní Choistín has taken up the position of Director General at the Irish broadcaster TG4.

Deirdre Ní Choistín will be the fourth Director General of the station since it was founded in 1996, and the first woman to be appointed to the role. She succeeds Alan Esslemont who has been Director General since 2016 and who stepped down this month.

Deirdre was TG4's first Head of News and Current Affairs. She was appointed in 2022 with responsibility for developing a strategy and vision for TG4's news and current affairs.

She has over twenty-five years experience at the broadcaster, having begun working with the station in 1999. She was a Producer and Director for fourteen years. She established MOLSCÉAL, a popular online news and entertainment platform for TG4’s core Irish speaking audience. And, prior to being appointed as Head of News and Current Affairs, she was TG4’s Communications Manager where she implemented an innovative new multi-platform communications strategy.
