90 years of Bulgarian National Radio: A personal journey
05 February 2025To mark the 90th anniversary of Bulgarian National Radio, our Head of Member Relations for Central & Eastern Europe Radka Betcheva shares a personal reflection on how the institution has shaped her life, from childhood memories of its studios to witnessing her mother’s remarkable career as a pioneering sound engineer. Through her experiences, she highlights the enduring magic of radio, the evolution of public service media, and the vital role BNR has played in Bulgarian society - from wartime broadcasts to modern digital innovation.
As the lights shimmered during the 90th anniversary celebration of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), a wave of emotions washed over me. For me, this was more than a celebration of an institutional milestone - it was a deeply personal journey, filled with memories of my childhood, my family, and the foundation of my cultural identity.
My mother - Yordanka Ferdinandova Koleva - devoted her entire career to BNR, from her student days to retirement. For nearly three decades, she was an integral part of its history. As the senior engineer, she designed studios, supervised the installation of new stereo sound equipment, and worked tirelessly as a sound engineer. Her passion and dedication to this institution were unmatched. She not only grew with BNR but also contributed to its evolution, aligning its progress with the people it served - and with our family.
A childhood enchanted by the magic of radio
I was only five years old when I first entered the radio building. To my young eyes, it was a wonderland - a magical space filled with music, actors, and performers. The microphones seemed like tools of wonder, capable of creating something extraordinary. Inspired by the creative environment around me, I began playing the piano, dreaming of one day contributing to this world.
As I grew older, I had the privilege of witnessing writers, journalists, and intellectuals discussing philosophy, literature, and world-class theatre. These moments ignited my fascination with storytelling, creativity, and the artistry that filled the airwaves.
One of my fondest memories is quietly observing the recording of classical music sessions. I admired the precision, expertise, and control that went into creating each broadcast. I felt part of a special family, surrounded by incredible talents like Bogdana Karadocheva, Emil Dimitrov, Vili Kazasyan, and Todor Kolev. These moments fueled my imagination and ambition to follow in my mother’s footsteps.
Watching her lead a technical team with confidence and professionalism was inspiring. She taught me that the magic of radio isn’t just in the sounds you hear but in the dedication and heart of those working behind the scenes to make it possible.
My mother’s unwavering dedication to her work made me realize that BNR was more than just a job for her. It was her life’s work. When I graduated from university, fate brought me to Bulgarian National Television, part of the same media family as BNR. This was during a pivotal time for Bulgaria, as the country transitioned from state media to public service media. Radio and television became the voice of the people, reflecting the struggles and growth of society. It was an exciting era of transformation.
90 years of excellence
During last month’s celebratory event, short videos showcased BNR’s impressive history and growth over 90 years. This institution has continuously perfected its professionalism and journalism, becoming an essential part of people’s lives. From being a lifeline during wartime to covering protests at Alexander Nevski Cathedral, and now evolving with mobile apps, BNR has always been there to inform, educate, and expand horizons.
The dedication of countless individuals, like my mother, has preserved BNR’s place in history and ensured its ongoing relevance.
The future of public service media
In today’s world, where disinformation challenges democracies, the importance of public service media has never been greater. As a trusted institution, radio is uniquely positioned to provide credible, verified information and combat propaganda and misinformation from social platforms.
Looking ahead, I trust that BNR will continue to adapt to new technologies while staying true to its mission: to serve the people and society.
As the applause fade on the celebrations, I feel immense gratitude for the legacy of dedication, passion, and service that BNR represents. My mother’s work and love for this institution will always inspire me. And I hope that radio will continue to inspire future generations.
