News Integrity in the Age of AI - BBC research

Artificial intelligence is transforming our relationship with media, information and reality. It’s vital that public service media embrace AI without compromising news integrity, audience trust and democratic values.

By expanding the BBC's critical research to other EBU territories, we have a unique opportunity to collect data and build a narrative for Big Tech, regulators and audiences about PSM's role in the accuracy and relevance of content.

Join the EBU and the BBC for a first working session on Wednesday, 26 March at 10:30 CET. We'll set next steps before kick-off in late March ahead of planned delivery in June.

Here is a reminder of the resources and requirements of this project, as suggested by BBC colleagues:

The goal of this research is to test how your own content is represented by AI assistants when audiences ask them questions.

Forty-five BBC News correspondents took part in their original research and reviewed 362 responses from four AI assistants (Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and ChatGPT).

For EBU Members to join, the BBC suggested the following timeframe and resources:

  • EBU Members may reduce their resource commitment by reducing the number of topics and questions.
  • Expect approximately 15 minutes of journalist time per question per AI assistant
  • The BBC recommends a minimum of 30 questions, approximately 30 hours of journalists’ time to review all four AI assistants.
