tech-i 64: New tech and a new direction for Ireland's RTÉ

With the EBU Technology & Innovation Summit 2025 hosted in Dublin this week by RTÉ, the latest issue of tech-i magazine celebrates the Irish broadcaster's new strategy and the tech that enables it.

Pages 10 and 11 of the magazine feature an article from Brian Wynne, RTÉ's Head of Technology Infrastructure, who describes some of the company's latest tech projects, including an IP-based production network and an object data storage system, both of which will revolutionize production workflows. New facilities to support the strategy include an LED wall studio and a suite of visual radio studios.

In his editorial for the June 2025 issue, T&I Director Antonio Arcidiacono focuses on how the EBU is working with partners to enable a major shift in how media production will operate in future. The Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) takes advantage of the exponential growth of computing power, creating an opportunity for more agile, flexible, and cost-effective media production:

"The resources used for DMF could be on-premises or in the cloud, even using resources from another EBU Member, assuming production schedules allow. Workflows could also be redistributed to align with different time zones of partner organizations. Because these models are independent of physical infrastructure, scaling out to public cloud platforms is entirely feasible. All of this opens the door to long-term visions like a European media cloud, where resources would be shared at scale for mutual benefit."

He also emphasizes the role of the forthcoming Media eXchange Layer (MXL) as a central enabler of DMF and a foundational layer for how media assets are exchanged between media functions. The EBU has recently embarked on a project to create the MXL in collaboration with the Linux Foundation and NABA.
