EBU, Linux Foundation and NABA launch open source MXL SDK for software-based Media Exchange

A major step forward for modern media production during the annual Network Technology Seminar: the launch of the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) SDK. This new open-source project, under the Linux Foundation's umbrella, directly addresses the need for native live media exchange on local or hosted compute infrastructure. This is especially relevant for the cloud-fit software systems defined by the EBU Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) Reference Architecture.

Cross-industry collaboration

The MXL SDK is the fruit of extensive collaboration, led by the EBU, in collaboration with NABA, EBU members including the BBC, SWR, SR, and CBC/Radio-Canada, and key vendors. This joint effort emerged from requirements identified by the EBU DMF group, aiming for a more agile and interoperable media ecosystem.

The first public release of the MXL code boostrapping the project is available at https://github.com/dmf-mxl/mxl, developed in less than seven months from its inception at an initial EBU meeting.

"The MXL SDK is a testament to what's possible when broadcasters and tech partners unite to solve industry challenges," stated EBU's CTO Antonio Arcidiacono. "It will be vital in helping our members fully leverage IT technologies to deploy vendor neutral live production systems."

The project's initial Technical Steering Committee includes the EBU, CBC/Radio-Canada (User-Chair), BBC, Grass Valley (Implementor-Chair), Riedel, Lawo, Nvidia, and AWS.
