Opening kids’ eyes to the wonders of Information and Communication Technology at EBU Girls in ICT Day 2025

Once a year, the ‘Girls in ICT Day’ invites young students to an excursion into their future and imagine a career in Information and Communications Technology. Led by the International Telecommunications Union, a UN agency, and hosted by partner organizations around the globe, the initiative explicitly aims at girls to help shift perceptions and address the gender imbalance still prevalent in the field – but boys are also invited!

This year, the EBU at its headquarters in Geneva hosted 20 students from a primary school of the local community for the 2025 Girls in ICT day. The kids spent a full day looking behind the scenes of a media and technology operation, discuss topics such as how to spot disinformation and misinformation, and finally, to produce a news bulletin in a news studio built by the students. The EBU News, Technology & Innovation and Facilities departments worked together to make this happen.

After an introduction, the girls split into three groups: journalist and interviewees, production team, and a separate generative AI group. After practicing their roles, the girls regrouped for few rehearsals to get ready for the shooting of the news bulletin.

In the meantime, the boys visited the EBU Media Control Room that enables EBU media organizations to manage and optimize delivery of live and recorded content seamlessly. In the afternoon, it was time for the boys’ hands-on sessions for the filming of the news bulletin and for the girls to visit the MCR.

All kids left with some hands-on experience from inside a media operation – and we hope many will return in their grown-up lives!
